Here are some hints and recommendations:

- Make sure that the New Zealand campsites you are staying at remain enjoyable and safe places. Others have the same rights as yourself for quiet enjoyment of the natural surrounding.

- Keep your site tidy, minimise impact on the environment, follow the rules provided - usually no pets permitted and plan not to leave any traces of your stay.
- When you empty your motorhome or camper van toilet please always use a designated dump station - be responsible.- Remember not to leave any valuables in your vehicles or use the safes provided in some vehicles to avoid theft which is unfortunately quite common in NZ.

- Bring Insect repellent for wasps and sandflies. Areas near lakes and rivers and beaches can have a lot of sandflies. Make sure you apply insect repellent before you expose your skin. Avoid wearing black colour; sandflies are attracted to black and dark colours.

- Bring a bag for your rubbish and take the rubbish away with you or discard if bins are provided.

- When you travel in your New Zealand campervan - do not forget to bring sunscreen and also a first aid kit - the sun in NZ is very strong during the summer months between October and March.

- Bring your own fuel and if you can some spare fuel.- You can chose between a basic campsite (free with limited facilities), a standard campsite (up to $10 per person, with relatively good facilities) and a serviced campsite (up to $14.00 per person with very good facilities) - fees for the DOC campsites are usually collected by a camp warden.

- Bookings for the serviced campsites can be made at the nearest DOC visitor centres, for basic and standard campsites no booking required - first come first serve basis. If in doubt ask at the DOC visitor centre, friendly DOC staff are happy to assist and help and can provide you with maps, DOC campsite directories etc.

- For all other campsites the local visitor centres have also got information, booklets and maps available - either for freedom camping or staying in one of the many official NZ campsites with your hired camper van or motorhome.
